Character: Link
Fandom: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Character Notes:
History:
-Link is a Hylian child that has been born into a time of war, his parents think that he shouldn’t have to be raised with all that chaos around him, so his mother takes him deep into the woods and seeks the Kokiri. Eventually she finds the Great Deku Tree, and upon finding this tree she collapses in front of it- and eventually the Kokiri children find the baby. Link’s mother isn’t a Kokiri- so she’s doomed to turn into a plant and forever be in the forest, in a sense there she is able to watch over her baby.
-The boy grows and develops in the forest, surrounded by the other Kokiri, and he too believes he is one of them. Except, he is without a fairy, and it is said that when a Kokiri has a fairy- it’s like the other half of them. He feels as though he’s missing something important by not having a fairy, and he was constantly teased by Mido and his friends. Every night he would dream of being far away in the world, of having a fairy- and most importantly that there would be impending doom about to befall the world he knew.
-One day a fairy came to him, her name was Navi- she woke him up in an abrupt manner and demanded he go see the the Deku Tree. He was confused, but soon he set out to see what was wrong with their leader of the forest. Upon coming to the tree, he told Link that something had corrupted him and asked if he would help. Of course Link obliged and soon the boy went in to venture inside of the tree. He found what was causing the corruption inside the tree- and he slayed Queen Gohma, a scorpion-like fiend.
-The tree soon died because he was too badly injured from having that thing inside him, along with the curse that was placed upon him. He informed Link of what was to come, and told him about the triforce along with how the world was created. Link then set off to collect the other spiritual stones after having acquired the Kokiri Emerald.
-Link’s adventure took off, and he soon found himself intrigued by all the new things. He had never seen the world before outside of the forest, so every little thing was interesting to him. The market place where he would play games at, the ranch where he had found horses and everything- all the people around him, it was exhilarating to the young boy. Eventually he had gone to the castle, intending to sneak in and talk to Princess Zelda. After having done so, he conversed with her and he found out that she had been dreaming about him- and that Ganondorf would soon bring about destruction to the land. She wrote Link a letter to go to Death Mountain and speak with the Gorons there if he were to get the Goron Ruby.
-Link went and found that the Gorons were in need of food, their main food source was in danger due to the Dodongos running around in the cavern near their home. The boy talked to the leader of the Goron, Darunia- and he had then set out to get the Ruby and defeat the enemy that was forcing the Gorons to starve.
-After he had gotten the trust of the Gorons along with the Ruby, his next destination was Zora’s domain. He went into the direction of the river, and after playing Zelda’s lullaby on his ocarina (that his best friend Saria had given him) he opened the entrance to the domain of the Zora people. He talked with the King and found out that Princess Ruto was missing. One thing led to another, and the boy soon found himself inside Lord Jabu-Jabu, also spotting Ruto there. After carrying her through the place and helping get her family heirloom back, she was flustered when he defeated a monster inside the giant fish- saying that she had only just been lonely, that’s why she was flustered. In the end she had given him the Zora’s Sapphire, but apparently it was like an engagement to Ruto…. Poor Link hadn’t a clue as to what that meant though.
-He had all the stones, and when he went back to the market, Zelda and her caretaker Impa were seen on horseback fleeing the scene. She tossed an Ocarina at him and that was the last he had seen of her. Soon after, Ganondorf had emerged and spoke with Link. The boy tried to oppose him but he was too weak with his small figure.
-Link took the stones to the Temple of Time after he had confronted Ganondorf, and placed them in the alter. He used his newly acquired Ocarina of Time to play the Song of Time and he opened a door- one that would lead him to the master sword. The boy stepped into the room and grabbed the sword, and a light soon engulfed him.
-Next he knew, he was a strange room, and talking to a very old looking man. He said he was the a Sage named Rauru and that Link has been dormant for about seven years. He needed to become someone who would be able to defeat Ganondorf, and he was unable to do so as a child. His next mission was to go to the other locations and awaken the other sages, and with the help of the sages he would be able to go to Ganondorf and defeat him. Apparently when Link entered the Sacred Realm, Ganondorf had been able to enter it as well and he corrupted the world of Hyrule, causing chaos in the seven years that Link had been asleep.
-Link set out to correct everything that Ganon had done, ranging from saving Lon Lon Ranch from a corrupt Ingo, to stopping Death Mountain from erupting and spewing fire. He went all around Hyrule and attempted to correct all the wrong that had been made. When he returned to the forest though, he was saddened since everyone remembered him as the boy Link- and no one would have thought he had grown up into a Hylian. He held his tongue and never told any of them though.
-Eventually he had awakened all the Sages, Saria, Darunia, Ruto, Impa, and Nabooru, and upon awakening the last Sage- Princess Zelda herself showed herself before Link. She had been going around as Shiek and told Link what to do and attempted to help him. After transforming back into Zelda she was captured by Ganondorf. Lin had gone to the castle and made his way to the King of Gerudos. Once there- he spotted Zelda in her diamond-like cage, and all the triforce pieces were gathered together. Link held courage, Zelda held wisdom and Ganondorf held power. The man turned around and attacked Link.
-After a fierce battle he thought that the king was dead, and Zelda lead him out of the castle. Once they were out, Ganondorf emerged once again. He used the triforce to transform into Ganon, a giant looking pig-like monster. Link once again went after him, and eventually he delivered the final blow. After defeating him, Zelda felt guilty for putting Link through all this- so she said she would send him back in time to before any of this happened. With Ganondorf sealed away in the Sacred Realm, he wouldn’t be able to cause trouble this time. So, she sent Link back seven years and Navi and him went their separate ways.
-Link soon found himself returning to the princess, and it was like the two of them had met previously…. But that was almost like a dream.
Personality:
(Due to the fact that Link is a silent protagonist in the game, I’m taking his personality and speech from the manga.)
More often than not, Link is a very energetic and excitable person. He often finds himself jumping for joy or getting overly worked up at the slightest things. He is a very naïve person, due to the fact that he’s been living in the forest for most of his life- he doesn’t quite know what there is in the world. He’s a very nice individual who would sooner offer his services than think of himself in a situation. Rarely is he looking for compensation if he does something for someone, he is a very selfless individual that feels full of self-fulfillment when he accomplishes his goals for someone. He’s rarely seen with a frown on his face, or even being overly serious- but he does know when to tone down that happy attitude of his when it matters. If he’s in a battle that energetic side of him will be replaced with something else, but even with all of that aside he still does whatever it takes to make someone happy. He likes to see people as equally excited and happy as he is- he doesn’t like it when people are sad around him. He likes to play and fool around, even after becoming an adult he may look mature on the outside but he still has the mind of a ten year old. He tones down his excitable attitude a lot when he becomes the proper Hero of Time, but that immature side of him is still around from time to time.
There was a reason that Link was chosen as someone who would hold the triforce of courage, and that was due to his overwhelming self of justice he has. Even though Link is young when he starts out on his journey, he soon finds himself able to run into battle without so much as a blink of an eye and swing a sword at the enemy. He has good fighting skills right away- and that could be due to his courageous heart just knowing what to do. Rarely will he find himself in a situation where he’s too scared and is about to back down, Link can get worked up or can feel fear at one point, but soon that feeling is replaced with his burning courage and he can overcome any challenge that is before him. That courage is only amplified when he becomes older, he is much stronger and able to take on a lot more challenges than before. He’s also not afraid to admit that he’s wrong or that he needs help with something, as made evident by one point in the manga where Link comes to Impa and asks her to help him with his sword training. He has a natural talent with a sword, but he needed to know more moves so he could get stronger and overcome the more skillful monster he had come across previously. He has a good head on his shoulders, but due to that courage he will rarely run away from a fight- it could get him in trouble sometimes.
Because he’s from the forest and only knows what’s been said around the other Kokiri children, Link is a very gullible person. He’ll believe anything that’s said to him and even trust people without thinking about the consequences. In the manga, as soon as he had left the forest and seen the marketplace, he went and grabbed at the food randomly on the stalls. Of course he got in trouble and was asked to pay- but he had no idea what money even was. Due to this sheltered life he finds himself constantly finding new things that intrigue him that might just be mundane and boring to other individuals. Another example would be when he found the bowling alley; he had looked at the sign and questioned what bowling even was- and soon after he found out he had spent most of the day playing the game and since he was so interested in such a thing.
Link has several dreams he has wanted to fulfill for as long as he could remember, and one of them would be to see more of the world. For ten years he had grown up inside the forest and knew only that, but after getting out he realized just how big the world really is. He wants to see more of the world- explore a lot of different places and see different people. He’s not afraid to venture in unknown territory; he’s a very curious individual and due to that courage of his he can’t think see something and then back down from exploring. Such actions will often get him in trouble though, mostly due to the fact that he’s a little too naïve to figure out that something should or shouldn’t be ask about further- or even explored for himself. Even though he’s been asked to save Hyrule, he often gets distracted due to his curiosity of the world and can find himself side tracked more often than not.
Link has a good head on his shoulders and he’s usually calm and collected, along with his bursts of excitement, but at the same time he can have an attitude that can only be described as being hotheaded. Normally he won’t be so quick to anger, but if he’s provoked and teased enough he’ll get ticked or even attack someone (in a playful manner of course) to prove that he’s no pushover. He’s a very nice individual but if he’s constantly out through teasing and jeering from other people he’s not afraid to show his hotheaded anger.
Other: Link also has a natural talent for the Ocarina, he was given one by his friend Saria and he was able to play it right away. He knows several songs and can play them flawlessly (only after learning a the first three notes, oddly enough.)

First Person (video):
[A boy sitting on the steps of the temple of time is seen, he’s holding up a mask and tilting it in his hands from time to time.]
What did that guy say, Navi? That this thing can supposedly read those stones we keep seeing everywhere….? How can a mask do something like that though- it seems kinda silly to me when I think about it. Unless it has some kind of… built in device….
[he ponders for a moment and then puts the mask on.] Well I don’t feel any different exactly- how do I look? About as good as a mask with one eye can look I guess…. Wha- hey! I wonder if I can read people’s minds! Didn’t that guy in Kakariko say something like that? There used to be that guy where the well was…. Or something…. And he could read minds…! …Or was it something else? Oh well.
[he takes off the mask, and looks at it with a confused frown on his face.] This isn’t as cool as I thought it was… it’d be pretty amazing if I put on a mask and… bam! I’d turned into like- a Goron! Wouldn’t that be cool?
Third Person:
Link was exhausted.
The man clad in greed continued to trudge on, he held Epona’s reigns in his hand and walked along the path in Hyrule Field. They had been riding together and the horse had stumbled- it was due to him pushing her too hard, he thought to himself. They had been running themselves ragged for days, and that was because Link wanted to hurry up and find the last temple, he had to awaken the last sage and save Hyrule from the fate that Ganondorf had placed upon it. He didn’t want to ride on her back and put too much pressure on her now injured leg, so instead he walked with her and tried to find a place to rest. The field was too open, and with his horse like this and just how tired he was, he felt way too vulnerable. There were too many opportunities for an enemy to come out of nowhere and attack them. He felt as though the enemy would win at this point- he was determined to keep going but in the back of his mind it was like he was at the end of his rope.
Eventually Link had spotted a place to rest, it was near the Gerudo’s base of operations, so it was like invading unknown territory, but he had to. It was in the dead of night- cold, and he was sure that if they didn’t rest soon he was about to collapse. Everything hurt, his muscles were sore and a wound he had sustained earlier began to bring more surges of pain through him. He endured it all though, he didn’t have time to complain, he didn’t have time to do anything that would but his own body at ease- he was so damn close to finally bringing Hyrule peace, he had to keep pressing on. At least, that’s what he wanted to do, but he felt like he couldn’t just yet, he had to make sure that his horse was okay. A small smile rose to his lips when he thought about what his friend Malon would say if she saw what he had done to Epona, he could just imagine her yelling at him perfectly. That little thought bring him more energy to keep going, at least until reaching that spot to rest.
